Access the Zoo Event Brings Together Central Illinois Special Needs Students for Day of Exploration
Peoria Zoo recently had the privilege of hosting its fifth annual "Access the Zoo" event. Access the Zoo provides a unique opportunity for special education classrooms from various Central Illinois schools to come together to mingle and explore Peoria Zoo.
(Students enjoyed visiting animal exhibits and exploring interpretation stations
throughout Peoria Zoo.)
The Zoo was able to offer the participants special chats, interpretation stations, and animal encounters. Participants in this year's event included over 600 students and staff from 19 schools. Peoria Zoo's Curator of Education, Jessica Slater, is very passionate about putting on this particular event. Slater stated, "While I truly love every day I spend at the Zoo, Access the Zoo is definitely one of my favorite days of the year. It's a day that warms my heart and fills me with a sense of community unlike any other day."
Volunteers from Farmington Central High School were on hand to chat with participants, facilitate a bounce house and activities, and even help get animal yards ready for summer! Peoria Zoo staff enjoyed providing Keeper Chats and Animals Encounters to participants throughout the Zoo.
If you know a school or teacher who would like to be included on the email list for next year's Access the Zoo event, please email email@example.com!
