On Sunday, November 5, from 12-5pm, the Peoria PlayHouse Children’s Museum is highlighting Peoria’s Mexican American community with Día de los Muertos, a regional Mexican holiday with Aztec roots that is held in honor of friends and family who have passed away. This celebration is an opportunity to remember death as a part of life. It is traditionally celebrated on November 1 & 2 and coincides with the Catholic holiday, All Saints’ Day.
Activities will include making papel picado banners and Mexican folk art, going on a bilingual scavenger hunt, viewing a Día de los Muertos altar, and more. Activities will be presented in collaboration with Bradley University Association of Latin American Students, Sigma Lambda Gamma – Epsilon Alpha chapter, and community members.
This event is free with museum admission ($8/person), or with your PlayHouse membership card. It is part of the PlayHouse’s ongoing “Celebrate Peoria” series, which is designed for families and children to discover the diversity of Peoria and Central Illinois. At each event, the PlayHouse examines one of the many cultures that make up the dynamic fabric of our community.
The mission of the Peoria PlayHouse is to provide children with the tools and inspiration they need to be explorers and creators of the world. For information on all Peoria PlayHouse programs, check out our website at www.peoriaplayhouse.org or call 309-323-6900.
