Methodist College to Host 3rd Annual Wellness Forum
ADDICTION: Staying Current on a Complex Medical Disease
(Peoria, IL) – The Methodist College Department of Continuing Education will host the 3rd annual Wellness Forum on Friday, April 26 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The focus of this year’s forum is “ADDICTION: Staying Current on a Complex Medical Disease” and will feature topics on a variety of addictions including substance abuse. The Methodist College Wellness Forum is a day-long education event for health care professionals, educators and the general public. The forum features two keynote speakers and multiple breakout sessions that focus on identifying the signs of addiction, supporting the treatment and understanding the complexities of addiction and recovery.
The first keynote speaker is Kirk Moberg, MD, PhD, the Executive Medical Director for the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery and a nationally recognized expert on addiction. The afternoon keynote speaker is Robert Carty, LCSW, CADC, CCJP, the Director of Clinical Services at Chicago’s Hazelden-Betty Ford Foundation with 40 years of experience in the addiction treatment profession.
Attendees of the Wellness Forum will learn about signs of addiction, supporting treatments, and understanding the complexities of addiction and recovery. The forum will explore how addiction disrupts the family structure and its impact on communities. In addition to the two keynote speakers, the forum will offer three blocks of concurrent break-out sessions. The break-out sessions include topics such as engaging youth to refine substance use policies, cannabinoids, process additions, family impacts of the opioid crisis, how motivational interviewing is changing addiction treatment, and addiction and changes in the brain.
Continuing education credits are available for nurses, social workers, counseling professionals, K-12 educators, and other professionals. For a list of continuing education granting bodies, please see the registration link.

In addition to the Wellness forum, a Community Awareness Event: Identifying the Signs of Substance use in Teens will be held on Thursday, April 25 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. This free community event will feature a mock teen bedroom exhibit that will help parents and community members recognize overlooked items that may be indicators of experimental or regular drug use. The walk-through exhibit and historical addiction advertisement display will be followed by a discussion panel with local experts.
The Wellness Forum and Community Awareness Event will be held at Methodist College located at 7600 N. Academic Drive in Peoria.
