November Brings a New Addition and a Sad Goodbye to Peoria Zoo
November has brought both a new addition and a sad loss to Peoria Zoo.
On November 14, 2018, the Zoo welcomed a second female takin, Bing Leng, from Minnesota Zoo. Bing Leng will be a companion to Meg, the Zoo's other female takin, until both are able to be in physical contact with the male.
Unfortunately, shortly after celebrating the new animal addition, the Zoo's male zebra, Hogan, died on Thanksgiving Day. In 2008, Hogan was one of the first animals to arrive for the new AFRICA! exhibit. He was 22 years old. The median life expectancy for a male Grevy's zebra in managed care is 10.9 years. Lab results are pending to determine the cause of death. Grevy's zebras are classified as endangered and there are only ~2,000 mature individuals in the wild.
