  • Peoria Zoo Invites Public to Help Name Baby Giraffe

    Beginning on Friday, January 26, the public will be invited to vote for their favorite of six possible names
    for the baby giraffe born at Peoria Zoo on Sunday, January 7. Votes can be placed on the Peoria Zoo website (www.peoriazoo.org) for a $1 donation with proceeds supporting the Giraffe Conservation Fund and the care and enrichment of the baby, mother Vivian, dad Taji, and brother, Finely. The vote will remain open from January 26 through February 26 and the winning name will be announced on March 1 at a press conference to be held at Peoria Zoo.

    The six name choices are:
    *“Farah” Arabic for Joy
    *“Fern” Symbolizes sincerity towards others
    *“Layla” Arabic for born at night
    *“Sophie” Suggested after the popular giraffe baby teether for human babies
    *“Twiggy” Swahili for giraffe is Twiga
    *“Zara” Arabic for giraffe is Zarafe and Zara is Arabic for princess

    Voters Entered for Chance to Meet Baby!
    Each $1 donation to Peoria Zoo will enter the voter into a raffl e to receive a private Meet and Greet for the winner and up to 5 people (ages 5 and older with minimum of two adults present) to visit with the baby and mother Vivian during the first week of March. The winner will be announced at the press conference where the winning baby name will be released to the public. The more you vote, the more times you're entered into the drawing!

    Accepting Visitors!
    Beginning February 1, Peoria Zoo will allow the public to view the baby and mother Vivian in their quarters through a window on the boardwalk of the Africa! exhibit. Special activities and snacks will be available in the Zambezi River Lodge to celebrate the baby's arrival. Please visit www.peoriazoo.org for details including dates and times of availability.
