Russell’s Cycling & Fitness - Operation Christmas Bike for Children’s Home
This Monday morning (12/17) at 8:30 a.m., Russell’s Cycling & Fitness will load 70 bikes to be delivered to the Children’s Home in Peoria. It’s all part of our Operation Christmas Bike program, where used bikes are donated by local bicyclists.
“We want to thank the very generous folks in Central Illinois for this huge program”, said Joe Russell, owner of Russell’s Cycle and Fitness.
“About 10 years ago, my wife and I noticed used bikes in our basement and used bikes are just as important as new ones,” said Russell. “So we wondered if we could make them like new and donate them to Children’s Home.”
Since then Russell’s has donated over 500 bikes to Children’s Home. Members of the community can come in during store hours and help by sponsoring a bike. Used bike sponsorships are $75-100 while new bike sponsorships can run $250-300. Partial and full sponsorships are available.
All sorts of people sponsor bikes, said Russell. “We get a lot of kids coming in with their piggybanks donating their money to help other children have a better holiday season.”
Russell’s fixes up each bike and delivers them to Children’s Home right before Christmas. They also donate bike helmets for each child as well. This Monday, December 17th, Russell’s will be loading up the bikes and delivering them. At 8:30 a.m., Joe Russell will be serving breakfast for those who help load bikes, as well as the media that cover the event.
