Peoria Zoo's Giraffe Calf Has A Name!
Zoo announces winning name for giraffe calf.
    PEORIA, ILLINOIS, MARCH 6, 2018 -
We have a winner!  As previously reported, the Peoria Zoo welcomed a baby giraffe on Sunday, January 7, 2018.  As a way to engage the community in the process to name the baby giraffe, the Peoria Park District opened up voting on 6 different names to the public.  Each vote cost $1 with portions of the proceeds going to benefit the giraffes at the Peoria Zoo and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.  Each $1 vote also entered participants for a chance to win a "meet and greet" with the baby giraffe and her mother, Vivian.  Voting closed at midnight on February 26, 2018.  All in all, there were 3,129 votes cast!
The Peoria Park District is excited to announce the winning name for the giraffe calf is Zara!  Zara is Arabic for "princess."  The winner of the meet and greet has also been selected.  Congratulations to Maria Spatafore on winning the chance to meet Zara and mother, Vivian!
The Peoria Park District would like to thank all those who participated in the voting and appreciates everyone who has followed along with Zara's birth and development.
